December 2019

Modest flooding.

December of 2019 was a fairly typical flood in Chelmsford, with flooding in Admirals Park and Central Park, and the greater part of the Meads floodplain.

Photographs

We're forunate to have a large collection of photographs taken by Jon Lee Draine and Steve Atkinson. Jon went to the valiant effort of cycling around most of Chelmsford on his bike getting pictures of the flooding. Steve took photos along the route of the Can, on the stretch through Admirals and Central Parks to where it merges with the Chelmer and drains out onto the floodplain. Steve had a passion for local history and made many posts on Chemsford Remembered about the history of our rivers and flooding, and was taken before his time.

37002 - Chelmer at Rushes Lock

A useful station due to data availability back to 1932. However, flow data is inacurate at low and high readings, due to bypassing which begins at 0.57 metres, presumably when the Lock Gates overflow. Upgraded in 1965, to increase max flow from 10 to 20 cumecs. Frustratingly the Level data is not available.

GDF: 1932-01-01 to 2010-10-05
